The next time you run out of toilet paper or need some coffee, your first instinct may be to go to the grocery store. Check out a non-traditional retailer for these things and you might save some money.
If you haven't noticed big-box specialty retailers have started carrying household items you might not expect. The Wall Street Journal examines why you might find toilet paper at Home Depot, coffee at Best Buy, and deodorant at Staples.
To lure you in, the prices are often better than your traditional grocery stores. The theory is that if they get you in the store to buy these consumable products, you might decide while you're there to pick up other items that you'd otherwise buy online. But if you're smart, you can avoid this—just make sure you check that the prices are actually cheaper first.
If you play your cards right, so to speak, this is a great way of using that odd amount left on a gift card. Not quite enough for new phone, but enough for many rolls of toilet paper. Another bonus is that these retailers often have loyalty programs that give you points that regular grocery stores might not.
